Kristie was in a motorcycle accident in Puerto Rico this past Saturday. She currently has a compound break of the fibula and tibia. She's doine okay, but needs to get into surgery as quickly as possible. This is where you come in: she needs to find an orthepedist. If you know of any orthepedists, have any leads, or know of some one who had surgery on their legs, please have them contact me directly.

Re: Kristie Needs Our Help
Mon, November 14, 2005 - 4:56 PMOMG. Is she on her own or does she have anyone with her? Do you know when she's going to be able to come back? How was she able to find a surgeon?
That girl did so much for me when I was recovering from surgery. Please let us know what we can do to help. -

Re: Kristie Needs Our Help
Mon, November 14, 2005 - 5:48 PMShe is with a mutual friend, so she is not alone. At the moment, we don't know when she'll get back as it has a lot to due with how quickly she will heal. I do hope that it will be soon though. And yes, they have found a surgeon and she's having surgery right now.
At the moment, there is not much that any one can do. I don't necessarily feel helpless, but I can't do much until she gets back, then there will be lots of work to be done. -

Mon, November 14, 2005 - 3:31 PMWell, Dobson helped me recover quickly. And the two of them get along famously (just keep away after Kristie has her way with Dobson -- she knows how to get him really wound up!) -

Mon, November 14, 2005 - 4:46 PMI know. That was my point. Wound up kitties are not calming and restful... I can understand that after she is bored, though. -

Re: Kristie Needs Our Help
Sun, November 20, 2005 - 12:31 PMI am home!
Thanks all for your well-wishes. My leg has been pinned together and I have no cast to deal with at all. Unfortunately this means that my fibula wiggles around a bit at the break point, but I am told that it will stop soon.
I am going to see another doctor here in the states more for physical therapy, speed of healing and cosmetic issues, so let me know if you have a recommendation.
My main concern while I was in PR was that the line for surgery was LONG and my case was not considered an emergency. I wanted to talk to a orthepedist to ask if my leg was in danger from the wait of 30 hours I had to endure.
I mostly kept up my good spirits and just knowing that Jenn and Kevin are at it again puts a smile on my face ...
Now back to my gruelling schedule of bedrest.

Re: Kristie Needs Our Help
Sun, November 20, 2005 - 4:22 PMHI Kristie, I'm so glad your home.
when I broke my tib and fib, I had to wait 4-5 days before my surgery. For the first week or so after a break, the bones are just softening around the edges in preparation to heal. From a bone mending point of view, you should be fine, though I wouldn't put a lot of weight on the leg for at least another 3-4 weeks. Your main concern is infection since the wound was open. Bone infection is serious. I'm sure that any Dr. that you go to will keep an eye on that.
It's nice that you dont have a cast so you can keep some muscle tone.
I was just an EMT, perhaps nurse lisa has more to say on this.
As for scars, scar revision is a fairly simple procedure that can be performed once your wound has healed. They remove the large scar and replace it with a cosmetic surgery scar. *Very nice.*
They used staples in my leg, and the scar was pretty ugly for a couple of years, but it faded, and it's hard to see now. I have a six inch long scar on my left forearm (boats are tough)that is almost impossible to see unless the light catches it just right. Other cosmetic issues are beyond my knowlege except that time works wonders....except for that gravity thing :P
I went to a great therapist in oakland, let me know if you need me to dig their info out. they were up in the summit (sutter?) hospital area near broadway.
It's so good to know that you're home.
